EDUCATION

The Deer Park Independent School District, already recognized throughout the State of Texas for its quality teaching and administrative teams, received further "recognition" as it was named a Recognized District as a result of the success of its students on the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) test.

This achievement, fostered as well by strong parental participation and first-class facilities, offers further encouragement to the community that the district has been successful in efforts to make the learning experience as meaningful as possible for each of its some 11,200 students.

The district consists of 14 campuses, each containinf state-of-the-art facilities and housing eager students and first-class teaching and administrative teams. Of these schools, 11 received above average ratings from the Texas Education Agency.

There are seven elementary schools within the Deer Park Independent School District, four junior high campuses, and a high school complex that includes three different campuses. The district is accredited by the Texas Education Agency and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Educators within the Deer Park district, working in close relation with the parents of students, offer a strong academic program that highlights the core curriculum of English language arts, math, science, fine arts, social studies, physical education, and technological literacy. Students are introduced to critical thinking and technological skills, and are also expected to acquire a knowledge of citizenship, economic responsibility, and appreciation of the multicultural American heritage.

The mission statement adopted by the Board of Trustees commits the district to preparing today's students for tomorrow's challenges. In adopting that mission, the district affirms its belief that the school system must challenge students to excel in academic studies and other aspects of education--including skills necessary for living productively in a rapidly changing world.

Students continue to show mastery of the TAAS test; Deer Park students consistently score above the state average at all levels of the test, and various campuses within the district have gained special recognition from the state for the academic achievements of their students.

Diversity is one of the keys to the educational experience within the Deer Park school district. Students have direct access to computer training and a number of innovative curriculum programs. And emphasis is also placed on extra-curricular activities, in the continuing effort to give all students the opportunity for a well-rounded learning experience. Students throughout the district, at virtually every grade level, excel in academic competitions.

The Deer Park High School Academic Decathlon Team has an excellent record when competing with schools from the Houston area and around the state, and the Science Olympiad teams are equally successful. Deer Park students also excel in athletics, chior, band, drama, and other events, taking advantage of outstanding instruction, first-class facilities, and strong community support.

The local business community plays a key role in the overall education experience, offering expertise, tutoring, manpower, financial support, and a strong commitment to help the district reach its educational goals. The district also has a successful school volunteer program comprised of over 1,000 parents and community members who support local staff with more than 46,000 volunteer hours annually.

Safety and security has always been an important concern in Deer Park schools. The district has an extensive plan for responding to both campus emergencies and larger situations that might involve the entire district and community. Practice drills are held routinely, and the emergency plan is continually revised. Each campus also has a video surveillance system, and the district has strong partnerships with police and other organizations such as the Deer Park Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC).
